Italian Glass from the collection of Dr. Richard and Susan Levy
The Levy's first acquaintance with Venini glass was in Florence in 1966. While visiting the decorative arts shop of a Mrs. Sarseni, they saw two transparent glass eggs with golden yolks; these were their first purchase of Venini glass. On visits to Italy over the ensuing several years, they sought Venini showrooms in Venice, Milan, and Paris, acquiring pieces from the 50s and 60s, the majority of which were by Bianconi. In 1970, the Levys met Robert Lowell, the North American distributor for Venini. Through him, the Levys acquired a number of 1940s pieces, as well as others by Paolo Venini and Ludovico de Santillana from the 50s and 60s. Their collection had grown substantially, on a visit to Milan in the early 1980s they met Ms. Tucci, the director of the Venini shop, who arranged a visit to the Venini glassworks and museum in Murano where they studied the museum collection and archives while observing glass making techniques. There, the Levys first saw pieces from the 1920s and 30s by Carlo Scarpa, Buzzi, and Matinuzzi. This visit increased their knowledge and interest in the design and execution of Venini glass. In Milan in 1984, the Levys met Maurizio Cocchi, who was knowledgeable about Venini glass and assisted them in acquiring important pieces from the 20s, 30s, and 40s to fill in the chronological sequence in their collection. With few exceptions, the collection covered every major designer of Venini glass and almost each technique used by the Venini glassworks over that period of time.
There are numerous collections of Venini glass worldwide, some contain hundreds of pieces. The collection of Susan and Richard Levy is one of the most comprehensive and important ones in the United States. For over thirty years, they have had the pleasure of learning about modern Italian glass through the judicious acquisition of Venini pieces.
Recently, the Levys decided to move from New Orleans to North Carolina. Meaning a smaller house with less room for display of glass. They have had the pleasure of living with their Venini glass for thirty years, because of the limited display space in their new residence, the Levys have decided to "deaccession" the majority of their Venini glass collection.
Note: Many pieces purchased from Mr. Robert Lowell were signed after import at Mr. Lowell's store. These signatures are described as "engraved (venini italia)" in the following descriptions. The signatures on these pieces are not an accurate representation as to age. Many pieces with this signature are believed to be from the 50s and not the 60s as the signature might suggest.
