496. Frederic Arthur Bridgman (American, 1847-1927), "North African Plaza", c.1905; oil/canvas, 22" x
26", signed, original carved frame. Highly important expatriate painter, known for his orientalist style works.
Bridgman studied at the National Academy of Design in 1863, while working as a steel engraver in New
York City. He went to Europe in 1866, and was one of the earliest members of the Pont-Aven artist's colony
in Brittany. He became one of Jean-Leon Gerome's first American students. Taking Gerome's lead,
Bridgman traveled to Algeria and Tangiers in the early 1870s. His paintings of North African scenes earned him a great
deal of fame and success, in New York and Paris. 10,000-20,000
