494. Julius Rolshoven (American, 1858-1930), "Interior Scene with Figure", c.1899; oil/canvas, 43" x 37", signed, original frame. Rolshoven began teaching in Paris in 1890. He spent a great deal of time in Italy, where this work was most likely painted. He traveled to New Mexico in 1916, and began painting Native American subjects. He spent the last 11 years of his life divided between Santa Fe and Italy. Rolshoven's work reveals his interest with the effects of light, and typically have a certain romanticism normally associated with old master paintings. 2500-4500 |

495. Frederick Oakes Sylvester (American, 1869-1915), "Bavarian Landscape", c.1906; oil/canvas, 20" x 24", signed. Important St. Louis painter. Sylvester began his career in Boston, but moved to New Orleans to replace Ellsworth Woodward as the director of the Art Department at Newcomb College in the 1890s. He became director of Pricipia College, a Christian Scientist College in 1902, and bought a home in Elsah, IL, a small town on the bluffs of the Mississippi. Sylvester visited Europe in 1906, painting in Italy and Germany. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, St. Louis Art Museum, Portland Expo, and the Society of Western Artists. 5000-7000 |
