In 1952 the ESU series were redesigned by the Eames Office. Modifications to the leg
structure were made to increase the
sturdiness of the cabinet. In addition the drawer units were improved
with an internal metal track
mechanism and a more durable dovetail design was added to
the front. The pulls were also
modified. Internal flat metal bands
were added to the inside of the masonite panels. The later ESUs are substantially heavier
than their
earlier counterparts. No doubt the modification improved the function of the storage
units, but some
of the aesthetic beauty of the earlier
examples was lost.
