Beginning in 1950, Zenith Plastics of Gardenia, California began producing the fiberglass-reinforced plastic shells. The early production shells were pulled from the mold by hand by a thin rope actually embedded on the shells edge. Eventually production methods were refined. The plastic chairs went on to be the Eameses most prolific design.
