Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen armchair for the Kleinhans Music Hall, 1939 molded plywood form reupholstered in a tan fabric in a birch frame, 23Ów x 23Ód x 28Óh, very good condition 3000-5000 The furniture for the Kleinhas Music Hall in Buffalo was an early collaboration between Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames done while Charles was working in Eliel SaarinenÕs office in 1939. According to Pat Kirkham in her book, Charles and Ray Eames Designers of the Twentieth Century, Charles executed the design drawings for the furniture. The molded form of the chair is highly influenced by Aalto and is still two-dimensional in its form yet it is gracefully balanced. The chair marks the first step in a collaboration that would yield the famous designs for the Museum of Modern ArtÕs Organic Design Competition in 1940. Not Shown 2013A Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen desk, 1940 manufactured by Red Lion Table Co. made for the Museum of Modern Art "Organic Design" competition, four drawers with cut out pulls beneath rectangular top on dowel legs all in a mahogany veneer, 48"w x 21"d x 30"h, excellent condition 3500-4500 Charles and Eero won first place in the competion for their groundbreaking seating and case good designs. |
