DAN JOHNSON FURNITURE

Dan Johnson was born in 1918. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1940's after earning a degree in architecture. Always interested in furniture and interiors, Mr. Johnson designed a line of furniture for the Selig Furniture Company in the early 1950s. Impatient with the constraints mass production imposed upon his freedom to design, Mr. Johnson left Selig. In the late 1950's with the backing of Arch Industries of California, the Dan Johnson Studio of Rome was formed.

The elegant Gazelle line was the result. Made of Italian walnut, bronze or aluminum, the quality of construction was superb. Production in Italy was extremely limited as each piece was entirely hand wrought and finished. Distributed exclusively in the United States, available shipping records indicate that total production was less than 140 pieces. Cost overruns and difficulty in production doomed the commercial success of the Gazelle line.

Dan Johnson dedicated the remainder of his career to interior design work in Los Angeles. Treadway/Toomey Gallery is pleased to present the following lots from the personal collection of Mr. Johnson.
