| 527. Rockwell Kent (American,1882-1971), "Breaking Ice", c.1930;watercolor/paper, 15" X 18.5" unsigned, bears name in pencil on verso, Sotheby's label. Important modern painter and printmaker. In the 1920s and 30s, Kent illustrated classic books, such as Moby Dick. He was a revolutionary as well as an artist, and his subject matter reveals his social and philosophical interests. Kent studied architecture for two years, but his interest switched solely to painting, and he studied with W.M. Chase, Robert Henri, and Kenneth Hayes Miller.
