493. Edward Gay (American, 1837-1928), "Golden Waves", c.1900; watercolor/paper, 19" x 13", signed, original frame. Well known landscape painter. Gay was born in Ireland, and moved to the U.S. in 1848, settling with his family in Albany, NY. He was urged to paint by the Hart brothers and George Boughton. He traveled to Germany in the early 1860s to study further. When he returned to the U.S. in 1867, he lived in Mount Vernon, NY, just north of New York City. He painted there, as well as making several trips to Europe. 1000-2000

494. Thomas Waterman Wood (American, 1823-1903), "At the Muddy Crossing", also known as, "The Midwife", c.1878; watercolor/paper, 19" x 13", signed. Wood was born in Vermont, and traveled to Boston in 1846 to study with Chester Harding. He traveled to Europe before settling permanently in New York in 1867. He is well known for his scenes of domestic life, and his work is in the collections of the J.B. Speed Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and the New YorkState Historical Society. 4000-6000

495. Anton Otto Fischer (American, 1882-1962), "An Arctic Expedition", c.1930; oil/canvas, 12" x 36", signed. Well known marine painter and illustrator. He spent much of his life traveling the seas, and was very familiar with ships. In his late teens and early twenties, he sailed on a windjammer nearly all around the world. He went ot Paris in 1906 to study art for two years, and when he returned he spent his time racing yachts in Long Island Sound. In World War II, he served on a cutter in the Coast Guard. He illustrated the Tugboat Annie stories that were featured for a number of years in the Saturday Evening Post. 1000-2000
