| 478. Anthony Thieme (American, 1888-1954), "Summer Day, Rockport", c.1925; oil/canvas, 12" x 16", signed, well framed. Thieme was born in Holland and came to the U.S. in the 1920s. He specialized in town scenes harbor scenes, and was a member of the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. He exhibited extensively in the 1920s and 30s, and won numerous awards. He established his own school in Rockport, MA. 6500-8500 |

| 479. Frank Coburn (American, 1862-1938), "The City at Night", c.1925; oil/board, 14" x 12", signed. Los Angeles painter, known for his evening street scenes. Coburn studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1890s, before moving to California in 1908. He established a studio at 218 South Broadway in Los Angeles (in the Copp Bldg). He exhibited at the Laguna Beach Art Asssociation (1921), Claifornia Yacht Club (1922), Painters and Sculptors of Southern California (1923), and the Pasadena Art Institute (1932). In Bradley DeLaney's book, Frank Coburn, An Early Los Angeles Painter , Coburn explains his interest in painting wet night scenes, "...(there) is no end to the mystery in the vague outline of things, as they melt into the abyss of the night. Then there are the phantom-like figures of pedestrians rushing as do the automobiles hither and thither. Where from or where to is another one of the mysteries." (p.135). 8000-10,000 |
