| 476. Harry Roseland (American, 1868-1950), "The Fortune Teller", c.1910; oil/canvas, 18" x 24", signed. Very well known genre painter. Roseland worked in New York City, and was largely self-taught. His favorite subject was the subculture of post-Civil War blacks and their roles in Northeastern white society. These paintings were narrative, but Roseland's intent was to disassociate himself from the situation and merely capture the moment. He remained in Brooklyn almost his entire life, and never bothered traveling to Europe. He chose to develop a personal style, and choose subject matter that was close to him, and influenced him on a personal level. This is an excellent example of this artist's work. 12,000-15,000 |
