| 573. Rudolph Weisenborn (American, b.1881), "Abstract Composition", c.1952; oil/board, 20" x 15", signed and dated. Important Chicago modernist. He exhibited at the Federal Art Project and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1938. Weisenborn combined references to Cubism, Expressionism, and Fauvism in a highly geometric form of painting. He was a leading figure in the avant-garde art groups, Cor Ardens, Neo-Arlemusc, and Les XX. These groups were reactionary to the conservatism of the Art Institute. He turned primarily to non-objective works in the 1930s, and was a member of the Abstract American Artists. 800-1200 |
