637. Joseph Ropes (American, 1812-1885), "A Figure with a Dog", c.1844; oil/canvas, 30" x 25", signed and titled on stretcher. Ropes was born in Salem, MA. He studied at the National Academy of Design. He traveled to Italy from 1865-1876. Ropes exhibited in the Centennial Expo in Philadelphia in 1876, upon his return, and then maintained a studio in Germantown for 10 years. He died in New York City. 2000-3000
