592. Herbert Bayer (Austrian/American, 1900-1985), "Weitere der SS Werbung", c.1930; collage, 9.75" x 7.75", pencil signed. Highly important Bauhaus artist/designer. Bayer worked with Moholy-Nagy at the Weimar Bauhaus in the print shop. Although there was no formal program in advertising design until later at Dessau, many students, including Bayer experimented with photomontage (Moholy called it "fotoplastik") in designing propaganda style posters and magazine covers. Bayer became a teacher at the Dessau Bauhaus, and was well recognized for his poster designs. The combination of typography and photomontage produced a striking visual image and a clearly defined statement. A very rare, early work for Bayer. 2500-3500 |
