574. Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), "The Seamstress", c.1936; oil/canvas, 21.5" x 28.5", signed and dated, from the estate of the artist. Important Detroit modernist painter. Yaeger worked in Paris with Lhote, Gromaire, and O. Friesz. He exhibited at the Detroit Institute of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1930s-40s). His style was much more associated with the European modernists than the social realists in America. A striking surrealist image by an American painter. 3000-5000

He exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Athena Museum, Geneva, Switzerland, and in Paris (1941-61). There was a major retrospective show of his work at the R.S. Johnson Galleries, Chicago, in 1963. 3000-4000

Studied in Paris, and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Art Association. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, Los Angeles Museum, Whitney Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He also executed WPA frescoes for the Department of Justice. 700-900
