568. Jan Matulka (Czechoslovakian/American, 1890-1972), "Rural Landscape", c.1930; oil/canvas, 23.5" x 29.5", artist's estate stamp on verso, and numbered, JM3-329. Important modernist painter. Matulka studied at the National Academy of Design, and worked primarily in New York City. He traveled to Paris in 1919, and his exposure to cubism profoundly influenced his style of painting. During the 1930s he executed WPA murals, and later taught at the Art Students League. 3000-5000 |
