563. Theodor Stedingk (American, 20th century), "Madame", c.1950; 40" x 30", unsigned, from the estate of the artist. Stedingk worked with Max Beckmann for two years in St. Louis. Morton May, an important art patron and collector of German expressionism, persuaded Beckmann to teach at the St. Louis School of Fine Art from 1948-49. He wished to support a group of artists painting in that style, and did so with partial success. The group included Edward Boccia, Walter Barker, Carl Hepp, Stedingk, and others. 600-800 |
