558. James McCracken (American, early 20th century), "First Snow", c.1935; oil/board, 25" x 32", signed, titled, label from the Chicago Gallery Association. McCracken was an important Iowa regionalist, associated with Grant Wood. His stylized images of the Iowa landscape and exotic birds gained him recognition locally and in Chicago. Landscapes by this painter are rarely offered at auction. 2000-3000

Been studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the John Herron. He exhibited extensively in the 1930s-40s, at the Carnegie Institute, Hoosier Salon, and the Detroit Institute of Art. He painted mostly still lifes and figurative works. 600-800

Thalinger exhibited extensively from the 1920s-50s, at the St. Louis Art Museum, 2' x 4' Society, and Group 15. This precisionist style reveals Thalinger's familiarity with the work of the New York modernists of the time. 2500-3500
