516. Thomas Birch (American, 1779-1851), "Returning from the Hunt", c.1837; oil/canvas, 17.5" x 25.5", signed and dated. Important early landscape and marine painter. Birch came to Philadelphia from England in 1794. His winter scenes are the most desirable landscape paintings by him. He exhibited frequently at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, National Academy, and the Society of Artists.
