The following lots are from the Estate of Charles Milhaupt, Vice President of the Gilman Paper Company, who died in March 1998. Born in San Mateo, California, Milhaupt grew up in Eugene, Oregon and moved to Los Angeles in 1972 to work in the film industry. He spent nine years working as a producer for the director, Norman Jewison. Among the films Charlie produced were A Soldiers Story, Iceman, and Agnes of God. Under his own banner he produced two films for Disney's Sunday Night at the Movies, Foreign Exchange, and Parent Trap 3.
In 1990 Charles Milhaupt joined the Gilman Paper Company in New York. Charlie's vision led the Howard Gilman foundation to extend it's generosity into the fields of dance, theater and medical research. Along with the late Howard Gilman, Charlie was instrumental in the formation of the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Charlie was especially active in causes benefiting heart disease and AIDS.
Charlie was an avid collector of art and furniture from the 1940's and 1950's. His home in the Silverlake section of Los Angeles, designed by Richard Neutra, and his Manhattan apartment were both featured in Elle Decor. His interest in furnishings and decoration developed rapidly after he moved to Manhattan full-time. A very visual person, he was always attracted to color. In fashion and decoration he was adept at juxatposing seemingly clashing colors in successful combinations. His bedroom was dominated by a huge Victor Vasserely tapestry hanging directly over an oversized custom multi-color George Nelson Marshmallow sofa. Charlie's passion and eye for form and color guided him creating his unique collection. |
