566. William Louis Sonntag (American, 1822-1900), "Woodland Interior", c.1880; oil/canvas, 19" x 31", signed, nice period frame, Vose Galleries stamp verso. Sonntag studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the early 1840s. He remained in Cincinnati during most of the 1850s, painting the Ohio landscape in a detailed style, influenced by Thomas Cole. He traveled to Europe in 1853, and again later that decade. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1861, he established a studio in New York City, and began exhibiting at the National Academy, and did so annually for almost 40 years. 6000-8000

567. Walter MacEwen (American, 1860-1943), "The Chess Players", c.1900; oil/canvas, 22" x 18", signed. Important impressionist figure painter. MacEwen studied in Paris, and exhibited at the Paris Salon (1886), Paris Expo (1889, 1900), Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, St. Louis Expo (1904), and the National Academy of Design. MacEwen was part of the American colony of artists who worked in Egmond, Holland in the 1880s. This group also included Gari Melchers and George Hitchcock. His work is included in the collections of the Luxembourg Museum, Musee Liege (Belgium), L.A. County Museum of Art, and the Musee Budapest. 10,000-15,000
