Arthur Beecher Carles (American, 1882-1952), "Religious Scene", c.1915; oil/canvas, 22" x 28", signed indistinctly, accompanied by a letter from Barbara Wolan, PhD, discussing the work, and stating possible similarities to other work from this period, and that the signature was comparable to the artist's, and appeared authentic under ultraviolet examination. Carles was an early modernist, and exhibited at the Armory Show in 1913. Stieglitz also gave Carles a one-man show at his gallery in 1912. Carles was highly influenced by the European modernists and his vibrant palette is much like the Fauvist painters. 1000-2000 |
