666. John Wesley Carroll (American, 1892-1959), "Circus Rider", c. 1938; oil/canvas, 51" x 31", signed. Carroll studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute (San Francisco) and at the University of California. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1922-52), Carnegie Institute (1926), Detroit Institute of Art (1930,1940), Guggenheim Fellow, St Louis Art Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery. Carroll taught at the Art Students League in NYC, and at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. Carroll was highly influenced by the Ashcan painters, especially the work of Shinn. Circus subjects were his most powerful images. A highly important example of the artist's work. 6000-8000
