647. Audley Dean Nichols (American, early 20th century), "Texas Landscape", c.1925; oil/canvas laid down, 16" x 24", signed. Nichols studied at the Art Students League and in Europe. He was active in El Paso, Texas from 1919-1935. His aunt, Maria L. Nichols, was the founder of Rookwood Pottery Co. in Cincinnati. Nichols specialized in dramatic landscapes with an effect of backlighting which brought surprising depth to the composition. This is an excellent example of his work. 3000-5000

649. Xavier Gonzalez (American, b.1898), "Abstraction", c.1943; oil/canvas, 36" x 24", signed. Gonzalez studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1920s. He exhibited in Los Angeles in 1930, Arts & Crafts Exhibition (New Orleans) 1937, and his work is in the collections of the San Antonio Museum of Fine Art, Dallas Museum, and the War and Peace Auditorium. He painted murals, and taught at the Newcomb Memorial College School of Art. 4000-6000 |
