610. Maurice Denis (French, 1870-1943), "Maternite devant la Mer", c.1895; oil/canvas, 15" x 11", signed, fine ornate frame. Highly important member of the Nabis group, which included painters, Bonnard, Vuillard, and Vallotton. These painters, influenced by Cezanne and Gauguin, their mentors, could be considered the bridge between the gap of post-impressionism and modernism. Denis' profound statement concerning the Nabis' avant-garde approach to painting, "Remember that a picture, before being a horse, a nude, or some kind of anecdote, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order." This became an ode to modernism at the turn of the century. 15,000-20,000 |

611. Victor Gabriel Gilbert (French, 1847-1935), "Children Having a Croissant", c.1890; oil/canvas, 24" x 18", signed, ornate frame. Gilbert was primarily self-taught. He could not afford to attend the Ecole de Beaux-Arts, but by working as an artisan for Eugene Adam, he was allowed to take evening classes with Pere Levasseur at the Ecole de la Ville de Paris. During the 1870s-80s, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francois, was very successful, winning several prizes and selling works. One patron was art dealer Pere Martin, who represented Jongkind and Boudin. Gilbert was well known for his paintings of children. He was awarded the silver medal at the Paris World's Fair of 1889, elected Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1897, and awarded the acclaimed Prix de Bonnat in 1926. This is an excellent example of Gilbert's work. This painting illustrates his mature style and favorite subject. 18,000-22,000 |
