| 606. William Penhallow Henderson (American, 1877-1943),
"The Fountain", c.1916; pastel/paper, 9.5" x 7", provenance:
Rouiller Galleries, Chicago, IL. Penhallow taught at the Chicago Academy
of Fine Arts from 1904-1910. He executed murals for Frank
Lloyd Wright's Midway Gardens in Chicago. William Gerdts, in
Art Across America: Two Centuries of Regional
Painting, says of Henderson's style: "(Henderson's work), combining simplified, patterned
forms related to the work of the French Nabis, such as Eduoard Vuillard,
with the aestheticism and poetic harmony derived from Whistler.
The Whistlerian influence is apparent in Henderson's vaporous use
of pastels, for which he was known during his Chicago years."
Henderson's work is in the collections of the Art Institute of
Chicago and the Denver Art Association. 500-700 |
