| 86. Thomas Faed (Scottish, 1826-1900), "A Difficult Question", c.1865;
oil/canvas, 20" x 16", signed, original frame. Well known Victorian painter.
In his book, Hard Times, Social Realism in Victorian
Art, Julian Treuherz writes, "Faed is not usually considered in the context of Victorian
Social Realism. Yet poverty was his central concern; his pictures of
orphans, beggars, and poor Scottish families all drew attention to it.
Faed's paintings...were enormously popular and must have influenced the way
many people visualized and thought of the poor." "The way he made poverty
and distress acceptable to public taste helps to provide insight into the nature
of Victorian social realism." 6000-8000 |
